Finland advances NATO uncrewed integration

Exercise tests Nordic-developed uncrewed airships and surface vessels in harsh conditions

Starting Monday, The Finnish Navy will host NATOs small scale operational experimentation exercise Dynamic Messenger.

The exercise takes place in Upinniemi until 13th March, according to a pressrealease from the navy.

Dynamic Messenger is a series of operational experimentation exercises related to the development of NATO's unmanned naval and aerial drones.

Within this framework, various system tests have been carried out in different parts of NATO's operating area. In this exercise, hydrogen-powered unmanned airships will be flown from the area of Upinniemi by the Finnish company Kelluu.

Kelluu has demonstrated multi-day, persistent autonomous operations in severe icing conditions while streaming real-time multi-sensor data over 5G and SATCOM into NATO-standard command-and-control systems.

Flight operations are carried out at all times of the day, with the aim of testing the systems in the winter weather and lighting conditions of the Baltic Sea.

NATO is accelerating the adoption of innovative technologies to increase its military advantage.

Demonstrations with uncrewed surface vehicles (USV) and other platforms in the operational environment advance the integration and scaling of this technology for Allies.
